For BJP rallies in Gujarat’s Muslim areas,
Modi’s name is taboo
While the BJP may claim of a massive wave in favour of its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi around the nation, the party is conspicuously avoiding any reference to the Hindu nationalist leader in the Muslim neighbourhoods of his own state.
Modi, in his rallies and interviews, is at pains to emphasise his single point agenda is to take the entire nation forward irrespective of religion or caste, but it appears that the party is all to aware of the incendiary effect of using his name when addressing the Muslim voter, especially in astate where the party hopes to sweep all 26 seats.
According to a report in The Indian Express, at BJP rallies in the 'Muslim ghettos' of the LK Advani's Gandhinagar constituency, there's no mention of the Gujarat CM's name, or posters bearing his picture
At a rally in Juhapura, vice president of the party's minority cell Irfan Ahmed steers clear of mentioning his party's pm candidate Narendra Modi.
“One of the senior-most leaders of the BJP, Mananiya Shri L K Advaniji, is your candidate. This time you have to vote for him. He has been winning with a three-four lakh lead. This time give him an additional one lakh lead. Each vote by you will make the BJP government and, with it, you will see the gaurav (pride) of Gujarat shine....(ending with) Jai Bharat!, Jai Vejalpura!, and Jai Juhapura!. ”
Ahmed further goes on to assure the voters that they will be 'protected' by their corporator Ila Patel and MLA Kishor Chauhan and there was no need for them to give-in to the Congress's appeasements through welfare schemes. In fact, Patel and Chauhan, both of whom addressed the crowd, did not mention Modi either, the Indian Express reports.
That even the BJP is unwilling to promise protection from Modi to Gujarat's Muslims somewhat ironic given the PM nominee's recent PR blitz aimed at reassuring minorites.
In the same interview, he attacked recent moves by the Congress for an OBC quota for backward Muslims saying it was nothing but a "last ditch effort" to indulge in "vote bank politics and politics of appeasement on the eve of elections".
The Congress was making such a promise knowing fully well that they cannot implement it, he said, adding, "I must also say that it exposes the true 'secular' character of the party which aims to garner votes on the basis of religion."
AHMEDABAD: Narendra Modi may have got the nation chanting 'Ab ki baar, Modi sarkaar' — the BJP slogan for change for the polls. Back home in Gujarat, which has seen Modi's sarkar since 2001, the slogan doesn't seem to be sticking to the voters. Changing track from the national tune, Modi, who has harped on Gujarati asmita (pride) for years, has cast a special net of words to woo Gujarat — 'Vote Tamaro, Vat Gujarat No' (Your vote, Gujarat's pride).
In the last leg of campaigning before Gujarat votes on April 30, the home ground is reverberating with the prospect of a Gujarati becoming the PM. 'Aapna Narendrabhai, Aapna PM', scream hoardings put up in many parts of Ahmedabad.
"For Gujarat we are focusing on linking Gujarati pride with a Gujarati, that is, Modi becoming PM," says Bharat Pandya, state BJP general secretary.
For Gujaratis known for their business acumen, the incentives of a Gujarati becoming the PM of India are being extolled by Modi himself. "Once our government is formed in Delhi, panchey aangaliyo ghee maa, leela laher (an extremely favorable situation). Mosaal maa bhojan hoy, maa pirasnaar hoy (Feast in maternal grandparents' house and mother is serving food). I don't need to explain more," he says.
Modi has also got the air-waves resounding with how a Gujarati will now restore justice to the state which has been meted step-motherly treatment by Congress at the Centre.
